Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall – The Waterfall You Can Walk On
If you are travelling around Northern Thailand, Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall, also known as Nam Tok Bua Tong, is a fun and unusual place to visit near Chiang Mai.
Unlike most waterfalls, where the rocks are slippery and climbing is best avoided, Bua Tong is famous for its unusual limestone surface with excellent grip. The mineral-rich spring water has created textured rocks that allow visitors to walk and climb directly on parts of the waterfall.

Nature Around Bua Tong
The waterfall is surrounded by forest, making the journey feel quite different from staying in Chiang Mai city.
The area around Bua Tong is green and peaceful, with trees, streams and small paths around the waterfall.

Walking Up the Sticky Waterfall
The main attraction is, of course, the waterfall itself.
Visitors can climb directly up the limestone rocks while the water flows around their feet. There are ropes in some sections to help with the steeper parts, and you can take your time as you make your way up.
It is not necessary to climb all the way to the top. There are several different sections where you can stop, enjoy the water and take photos.

A Great Place for Photos
Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall is also a good place to take some different travel photos.
The white limestone contrasts nicely with the surrounding green tropical forest, while the flowing water creates plenty of opportunities for close-up shots.
You can photograph the waterfall itself, the surrounding jungle, the limestone formations or simply capture the experience of walking through the water.

How Far Is Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall from Chiang Mai?
Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall is located approximately 70–80 km north of Chiang Mai, depending on your starting point and route.
By scooter, the journey usually takes around 1–1.5 hours, making it a convenient day trip from Chiang Mai.
And because the route through Mae Taeng is scenic, the journey itself becomes part of the experience.

What Should You Bring?
Since you will probably be walking through the water, a few simple things can make your visit more comfortable:
- Comfortable clothes
- Water shoes or shoes with good grip
- A towel and change of clothes
- Sunscreen
- Drinking water
- Waterproof bag for your phone and valuables
- Camera or phone for photos
And remember that the limestone can still be uneven, so take your time and use the ropes where provided.
