Muang On Cave – A Great Stop on the Way to Mae Kampong
Today I took my scooter from Chiang Mai towards Mae Kampong, and Muang On Cave was one of those stops that turned out to be much more impressive than expected.
Muang On Cave, also known as Tham Muang On, is located in the Mae On area, around 40–50 minutes from Chiang Mai depending on your starting point and traffic, this fascinating limestone cave is well worth adding to your Northern Thailand itinerary.

Climbing the Staircase to Muang On Cave
The visit starts with a climb up a long staircase leading from the temple grounds to the cave entrance. The staircase has decorative Naga serpent railings, giving it a distinctive appearance and making the approach part of the experience.
There are approximately 187 steps, so take your time, especially on a hot day. The climb is manageable for many visitors, but it can be tiring if you rush.

Exploring Muang On Cave and Its Temple
Take your time to look around and appreciate the details. The cave is not simply a geological attraction; it is also an important place of Buddhist worship.
The temple area outside the cave is worth exploring, too. Together, the temple and cavern offer a combination of natural scenery, local culture and spiritual history that makes this stop different from a typical sightseeing attraction.

Great Photo Opportunities at Muang On Cave
Muang On Cave offers plenty of interesting photo opportunities, from its impressive limestone formations to the peaceful temple atmosphere inside the cavern.
Capture the large reclining Buddha, the dramatic rock formations, or the view into the cave with its natural textures and unusual shapes. The contrast between the ancient Buddhist statues and the rugged limestone surroundings makes this a memorable stop for photography on your ride from Chiang Mai towards Mae Kampong.

What Should You Bring?
Exploring Muang On Cave and its temple area is easier if you come prepared. Here are a few useful things to bring for a comfortable visit:
- Comfortable clothes and shoes with good grip
- Drinking water
- A small towel if you tend to get warm while climbing the stairs
- A camera or phone for photos
- A small bag to keep your personal belongings together
There is a long staircase leading up to the cave, so take your time on the climb. Inside, watch your step on the uneven surfaces and be careful around the limestone formations. Respect the temple area and Buddha images, and dress appropriately when visiting this sacred place.

Muang On Cave – Worth a Visit?
For me, Muang On Cave is definitely worth a visit, especially if you enjoy discovering places beyond Chiang Mai’s usual tourist highlights.
What I particularly like is how easily the cave fits into a day exploring the countryside. You can enjoy a short adventure, discover a fascinating natural and cultural attraction, and then continue towards Mae Kampong without having to plan an entirely separate trip.

For me, this is exactly what makes riding around Northern Thailand so enjoyable: the journey is just as exciting as the destination…
