The White Temple in Chiang Rai – A Masterpiece in White
Step into a world where Thai tradition meets modern art at Wat Rong Khun, better known as the White Temple of Chiang Rai.
A Temple Unlike Any Other
The White Temple was created by Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, who began transforming the temple in 1997. His vision was very different from a conventional Buddhist temple.
The brilliant white color represents the purity of the Buddha, while small pieces of mirrored glass reflect light and symbolize wisdom.
As you walk around the complex, you will notice that almost every part has a meaning. From the sculptures and mythical creatures to the bridge leading towards the main temple, the artwork tells a story about the journey from the ordinary world towards enlightenment.
Look Closely at the Details
Don’t just take a photo of the temple and leave.
Walk around and look at the decorations, sculptures and mirrored details. The architecture combines traditional Thai influences with the artist’s contemporary style, creating something that feels completely different from most temples in Thailand.
The three-tiered roof is decorated with detailed Naga figures, while mythical creatures, guardians and other sculptures appear throughout the complex.
Every few steps there seems to be another detail worth photographing.
The Famous White Temple Bridge
One of the most recognizable parts of Wat Rong Khun is the bridge leading towards the main temple.
The bridge represents the journey from the cycle of rebirth towards nirvana. Around it, you can see sculptures and hands reaching upwards, creating one of the most unusual scenes at the temple.
It is also one of the best places to appreciate the incredible amount of detail that has gone into the design.

Daily: 6:30 AM – 6:00 PM
Best time to visit: Arriving early is a good way to enjoy the temple with fewer visitors.
And Then There Is the Golden Building
One of the funniest surprises at the White Temple is the golden restroom building.
While the main temple is covered in white, the restroom building is almost completely gold. According to the symbolism of the complex, the white represents Buddhist purity while the gold represents worldly desires and material distractions.
It has also become one of the most photographed parts of the entire complex.
